March 2023 GO Virginia Grant Awards – Region 5

Demonstration Site for Clean Energy Transition to Green Hydrogen (HRH2) | $1,497,452

Region 5: Cities of Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach

Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center (VTCRC) will scale-up the clean energy industry in Hampton Roads through green hydrogen production. The project will initiate three to five hydrogen transition projects to drive local industry investments, establish a hydrogen competency center to educate and attract businesses and creating advanced workforce and talent programs to support the clean energy sector. The project will create 230 jobs, attract 10 new businesses and serve 25 existing businesses.

Region 5: Counties of Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City, Poquoson, Southampton and York, the cities of Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Williamsburg, and Virginia Beach

The Hampton Roads Workforce Council (HRWC) will develop the Region 5 Talent Pathways Initiative (TPI) plans for Region 5’s cybersecurity/data analytics/modeling and simulation cluster, as well as the unmanned systems and aerospace cluster. HRWC will serve as the industry cluster talent-coordinating entity, utilizing labor market information and projections verified by an employer collaborative to form a tailored approach to the identified industry clusters.
